Solar micro-inverters convert direct current electricity generated by solar panels into alternating current used in electrical grids

Frontier IP Group Plc’s (LON:FIPP) portfolio firm Pulsiv Solar has signed an agreement with German engineering giant Bosch to optimise the design of its energy-efficient solar micro-inverter prototype.

Solar micro-inverters are plug-in devices that convert direct current (DC) electricity generated by solar panels into alternating current (AC) used in electrical grids. The devices can also be used to improve the efficiency of power converters for devices like TVs, mobile phones, and laptops.

Frontier, which holds an 18.9% stake in Pulsiv, said the solar energy firm’s work with Bosch would be funded as part of a £288,732 project backed by a £129,929 grant from Innovate UK, the UK's innovation agency.

Pulsiv is aiming to improve the energy delivered to the grid using its micro-inverter to 5% above current market leaders.

Frontier’s chief executive officer Neil Crabb said the company was “pleased with the progress Pulsiv Solar is making” and the agreement with Bosch supported the “validation” of the firm’s technology.

Topps Tiles to launch sustainable range made by Alusid

In a separate announcement, Frontier said Alusid, which makes a stone substitute from recycled glass and ceramics, would have its range of sustainable tiles launched and sold by Parkside Architectural Tiles, the commercial arm of retailer Topps Tiles Plc (LON:TPT).

The tile range, which will be marketed under the brand name Sequel, will be launched at the Clerkenwell Design Week festival on May 21.

Frontier, which holds a 35.6% stake in Alusid, previously raised £1.34mln in September to help scale up the company’s manufacturing capacity from 4,000 square metres of tile per month to 30,000.

“We believe there is greater demand to be fulfilled, and we are now actively exploring options to transform the company's manufacturing capacity", Crabb said.

Investor Event

The announcements accompanied news that Frontier would be hosting an investor event on 8 April at the Royal Academy of Engineering in London as part of a collaboration between the two organisations.

Alusid and Pulsiv will be among Frontier’s portfolio companies represented at the event, with others being green solvent maker Des Solutio, robot developer Fieldwork Robotics, water testing group Molendotech, ingredients firm Nandi Proteins and circuit printer NTPE.

In morning, Frontier IP shares were up 0.6% at 84.5p.
